One of Ariel's biggest interests is in the human world on the surface which was forbidden by King Triton for mermaids to interact with for reasons that are still unknown to her. She fell in love with a human male Eric and was on her way to see the Sea Witch to grant her the ability to appear on the surface as a human when a dimensional gateway opened up and pulled her into Hallowton.
